Live! Love! Revolt! presents New Model Army

Date: Wednesday, September 12 with doors at 8 p.m.

Venue: Soul Kitchen, 219 Dauphin St., 433-5958

Tickets: $10 adv./$12 day-of available at Soul Kitchen, Satori Coffee, Samauri J’s and Mellow Mushroom

The U.K.’s New Model Army is invading the Port City armed with an arsenal of post-punk and folk rock powered by their intellectual subject matter and political message. No one is safe from their scathing criticisms with politically charged music that has gotten them both banned from the BBC and denied from entering the U.S.

New Model Army took their first political jab with their debut album “Vengeance,” with songs such as “Spirit of the Falklands” criticizing Britain’s involvement in the Falklands War. Their single “51st State” brought America into the mix with accusations that Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was trying to Americanize Great Britain.

They are currently touring in support of their latest release “High” on their label Attack Attack. Legendary producer Chris Kimsey lent a helpful hand in the creation of this album. Kimsey is well known for his involvement in such classic records as Rolling Stones’ “Sticky Fingers” and “Some Girls.” New Model Army has not lost their fire as seen with rage-filled ballads such as “Wired.”

With a U.S. release date set for Sept. 4, their fans in Mobile should not be disappointed with the album or their intense performance.

Benefit for Casey Beshears feat. Top of the Orange and The Tiles

Date: Sept. 8 at 8 p.m.

Venue: Pat’s Downtown, 271 Dauphin St., 438-9585

Tickets: $10 donation at the door

When Casey Beshears was diagnosed with a rare disease called Behcet’s Syndrome, neither she nor her loved ones could have predicted the daily challenges that she has bravely faced. When she first felt the effects of Behcet’s, the doctors that she visited had a hard time classifying her condition because of its rarity.

After her brother Cody researched her symptoms and specialists in the field of Behcet’s, she found a doctor who agreed to treat her condition. However, this treatment came at an enormous price. Financial hardships hit the Beshears, so her family and a ton of friends are lending a hand in the form of a musical benefit.

Mobile’s alterno-pop sensations The Tiles will be getting the crowd on their feet with their energetic sound. Bayfest-bound Top of the Orange also plans on pumping out their mainstream rock jams in the name of charity.

There will also be a silent auction throughout the evening. If you’re not able to attend, then donations can be made through calling 251-367-0971 or contacting Cody Beshears at codyb_1256@yahoo.com

Parabellum, Glutton 4 Misery, Prime Mover and Tranquilizer

Date: Friday, Aug. 31 at 10 p.m.

Venue: The Blind Mule, 57 N. Claiborne St., 694-6853

Parabellum is oozing their way out of the Florida marshes to give Mobile another dose of their doom-filled Swamp Metal. Besides touring across the Southeast, Parabellum has been busy in the studio. As they were making their way through South Florida, they recorded “Dirt Kicker” at Helton Music Studios in Ocala. This track will appear on the upcoming tribute album to sludgemeisters Buzz-Oven, along with tracks from Sourvein, among others.

Mobile’s own Glutton 4 Misery will be in attendance. Their old-school sounds delved into the realm of thrash until their hell-forged vocals come into play. These guys have become quite a favorite with the local metalheads, and many will be coming out of the woodworks. Prime Mover is coming all the way from Jersey for this night of unholy debauchery, and Tranquilizer is making the drive from Orlando to add to the madness.

The Rundown

With the strict formats that modern radio has brought, it’s hard for a band to get their music heard beyond the venue. Internet radio is slowly becoming an outlet for new music, and many bands are taking advantage of this medium. Mobile now has “MHN Radio: Your Alternative Rock Source” broadcasting loud and clear on the web. This is an absolutely free way for local bands to get their music heard. Local bands are encouraged to send their music and album art to: mhnradio@mchsi.com.

Punks in the Kitchen

U.K. anarcho-punks the Subhumans will be destroying the Port City Sept. 13 at the Soul Kitchen courtesy of LiveRevolt!. Many Sub-Citizens will be happy to know that this performance will feature the original line-up. Joining the Subhumans will be the World Inferno Friendship Society. The show starts at 9 p.m., and tickets are $10.

Keen booked again

Many were disappointed when Robert Earl Keen had to bail on his performance at Soul Kitchen, but Keen has kept Mobile in his thoughts. Huka Entertainment has rescheduled the show for Oct. 26 at the Saenger with doors at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster outlets, at the Saenger Box Office, or by phone at 1-877-277-1700.

Electro-squid emerges

Once upon a time (like 3 or 4 years ago), Scarecrow hit the underground scene with a nerdcore electronic sound that forced its listeners into dancing. Much to the disappointment of many fans, Scarecrow met an untimely demise. Now, Andrew and Michael are back under the name Blood Red Squid and with an evolved, impressive sound. The electronic quality of the music has naturally matured, and their lyric compositions are just as fresh as their former band. Pick up a copy of their debut “Shapes” at www.bloodredsquid.com.

Bellies galore!

When the Bellydance Superstars (a pet project of music guru Miles Copeland) last came through Mobile, the audience was mesmerized by exotic sounds and dance that many others have experienced at festivals such as Lollapalooza. The Superstars are paying another visit to the Saenger Theater Oct. 18. Once again these beautiful ladies will seduce the audience into submission with their unmerciful gyrations, while Zoe Jakes takes tribal drums to another level. Tickets are on sale at The Saenger Box Office now for this unique experience.
