The Quest for Social Justice, a non-profit, faith based organization, committed to raising public consciousness about social issues, is sponsoring two lectures by a prominent filmmaker whose work has exposed the harsh living conditions faced by maquiladora workers. Barbara Martinez Jitner lived for weeks in Tijuana, Mexico with the family of Eva Conseco in a makeshift shack with no electricity or running water. Posing as a factory worker herself, Martinez Jitner uncovered a dark world of grueling poverty and abuse. Her documentary, La Frontera, was critically acclaimed and became the inspiration for a recently released film, Bordertown starting Jennifer Lopez and Antonio Banderas. Martinez Jitner’s lectures are certain to be of interest to all those interested in knowing how “free trade” policies affect workers on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. The lecture, film and Q & A will be presented on October 18, 2007 from 3:00-4:30 pm at The University of South Alabama’s Humanities Building Room # 150 and from 7:00-8:30 pm at Spring Hill College in Byrne Hall.

The seventh annual PEP Open House will be held Thursday, Oct. 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Ft. Whiting Auditorium. The event uses the reverse trade show format of having large industry decision-makers in the booths for suppliers and vendors to call on. The event is open to the public.
