Quarter Moon Fest

Date: Saturday, November 17 at 10 am Venue: French Quarter Apartments, 557 Azalea Rd.

Tickets: $8 at the gate, $6 in adv. available at Whitney Bank

The Ronald McDonald House has been a socially influential and charitable institution for many years now. There are numerous testimonies from across the U.S. detailing the financial and emotional support that the Ronald McDonald House has provided to many families. However, it takes money for this organization to operate, and Quarter Moon Fest plans on lending a helping hand to a very well-known helping hand. There will be raffles, T-shirts for sale and a henna artist straight from David’s Gallery, but the most impressive component of this benefit will be the numerous local bands that will be performing in the name of charity. The organizers of this event have made sure that there is a wide spectrum of music for those in attendance.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. with a performance from the Justin Fobes Band. Camp 7 Entertainment will follow with their soulful sounds. The Low Down Throw Down plans on bringing their homegrown jams to the event, and local hip-hop artists Mic Messengers and Subject Matters will drop their rhymes on the crowd. Crisis Story will kick off the afternoon followed by the sweet twangs of The Modern Eldorados. Top of the Orange will be headlining the event with their mainstream rock sounds.

Rick Springfield w/ special guests Eddie Money and Scandal

Date: Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.

Venue: Hard Rock Casino, 777 Beach Blvd

Tickets: $65, $50, $40 available through Ticketmaster and at the Hard Rock Casino

Rick Springfield could be considered the quintessential ‘80s heartthrob. This native Australian has effortlessly balance a career both in music and acting. When Springfield wasn’t on stage singing hits such as “Jessie’s Girl,” he was breaking hearts on the soap opera “General Hospital” as Dr. Noah Drake. Springfield has recently released “Christmas with You” with his live album “Who Killed Rock and Roll” coming in 2008 and is currently on the Working Class Tour.

Joining Springfield will be other popular voices of the past. After a short stint working with NYPD, Eddie Money won over audiences in the ‘70s with songs such as “Baby Hold Onto Me” and “Two Tickets to Paradise.” His latest album “Wanna Go Back” is a collection of cover songs.

Scandal will be opening up this show. They are most known for their ‘80s hits “Goodbye to You” and “The Warrior.”

The Rundown

Andy’s alter ego

Soul Kitchen’s Brad Young was recently surprised when he was paid a visit by the legendary Bob Zmuda. Bob Zmuda (portrayed in “Man on the Moon” by Paul Giamatti) was the right hand man of Andy Kaufman and helped Kaufman with many of his comedic stunts. One such stunt involved Kaufman’s alter-ego: a sleazy Vegas crooner by the name of Tony Clifton. Zmuda would sometimes appear as Clifton to throw off the suspicious public.

So, what brings Zmuda to the Port City? According to Young, he is currently scouting out venues for a Hurricane Katrina benefit tour featuring New Orleans musical acts and Tony Clifton. The gracious comedian gave Young a copy of his tell-all book “Andy Kaufman Revealed!” autographed by not only Zmuda but also Clifton.

Holiday season looms

With Mobile’s three-month holiday season on its way, music lovers will be ecstatic to know that various local venues and promoters are already hard at work planning some great events, especially on New Year’s Eve. On Dec. 31, Huka Entertainment is planning an unforgettable evening at the Saenger with a performance from Dr. John. Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster and at the Saenger Theater box office. All of Dr. John’s performances are special, and it’s safe to say that his New Year’s Eve party will be no exception.

Jams persevere

The jams still continue at the American Legion Post 199 on the ESho. Many professional and amateur guitarists have been making the drive to show off their skills on the fret board. On Nov. 16, Nothing but the Blues with the Johnsons and Big Blue will be hosting this grand showcase of local talent.

McNabs busy

Jack Jaw Jimmy has become quite a popular fixture at local watering holes such as Trader’s and Paddy O’Toole’s. Their shows are a vast mix of Southern rock and blues, accented by the band’s unmatchable talent and the ability to jam with any random person who walks in the door. Their calendar stays pretty full. Many of their fans will be disappointed to learn that the boys will be playing less in the next few months. They plan on using this time to retreat into the inner-sanctum of the McNab Compound to work on a set-list of original tunes, but plan to be back on stage as soon as possible.
