In 1995, Silverchair hit America as the American alternative music craze peaked. Still in their early teens, Daniel Johns (guitar/vocals), Chris Joannou (bass) and Ben Gilles (drums) created a vehement style of post-grunge, while lacing it with personal commentaries on society and life in general.

With the release of their debut “Frogstomp,” their song “Tomorrow” broke into the U.S. Top Ten, making them the first Australian band to earn this honor since INXS. It was certified platinum, and to this day, “Tomorrow” still receives regular radio play. “Frogstomp” was followed by “Freak Show,” “Neon Ballroom,” and “Diorama” before the band went into an indefinite hiatus.

At the end of 2006, Johns announced that Silverchair was once again in the studio working on a new album. The fruit of their labor came in 2007 with the release of “Young Modern.” In Australia, fans of Silverchair are on fire for this one with the band’s first single exploding onto the charts.

Now, Silverchair is hoping to rekindle the love that they found in America over a decade ago with the “Across the Great Divide” tour.

Caddle

Date: Saturday, Dec. 15 at 11 pm

Venue: Monsoon’s, 9 N. Jackson St., 438-5500

Tickets: $5

Come see the band Steve Earle’s manager (John Dotson) called “Steve Earle meets The Clash.” This Birmingham combo set the crowd on fire at BayFest, and they’re coming back to the Port City for more. With their unique hybrid of country, southern rock and punk, this band has spent time touring extensively across the U.S. roping in fans at the drop of their Stetsons. They are currently touring in support of their 2006 release “Raise ‘em High” with a tour schedule that stays chocked-full.

Caddle has been spending quite a bit of time in Nashville working on new material. In addition, they have also perked the ears of quite a few industry figures.

After playing BayFest, they got on board with the Bobby Roberts Company (Merle Haggard/Kentucky Headhunters) and the Nashville-based agency N8 Management has taken them into their fold.

Tartufi

Date: Thursday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m.

Venue: Satori Coffee and Sound, 5460 Old Shell Rd., 251-344-4575

Tickets: TBA

Tartufi is one of San Francisco’s most impressive underground duos and in July was voted Best Indie Band in a readers’ poll conducted by San Francisco’s “Bay Guardian.” Comprised of Lynne Angel (guitar/bass/vocals/drums) and Brian Gorman (drums/xylophone/bass/megaphone), Tartufi’s eclectic underground sound is a perfect example of the minimalist trend in rock that seems to be all the rage. This was evident with their critically acclaim showcase at the 2006 SXSW.

After playing SXSW, Angel and Gorman went back into Louder Studios with Tim Green (The Melvins/Sleater-Kinney) to create “Us Upon Buildings Upon Us” and are currently touring in support of this album. When this hard-working duo hit the road in October, they already had over 55 shows booked over a two-month period with more shows being added daily.

Tartufi will continue across the Southwest and wrap up their fall tour in Los Angeles.

Mobile’s Muskrat Hannah has definitely made their presence known in the Port City and their impressive performance at Woofstock in Bienville Square was a perfect addition to a beautiful afternoon.

Kristin Musgrove (guitar/vocals), Ben Mayer (bass) and Evan Jackson (drums) have gotten to the roots of ‘90s alternative. Musgrove’s vocals are forged in the tradition of Dolores O’Riordan (The Cranberries) and accented by her clean riffs with Mayer and Jackson keeping their beats and backbeats in perfect time. Hopefully, Mobile will see more and more of Muskrat Hannah but until then, make the drive over to The Celtic in Pascagoula Dec. 14 for your own experience.

Local Southern rockers

Wilmer’s finest, Hyde Project is still living loud and proud. Their Southern rock sound has made them a local favorite for several years now with guitarist/vocalist Grant Dunaway spending his free time performing solo.

Experiencing Hyde Project for a single song is more than enough proof these musicians have honed their talent to a fine art form. The Christmas season will be the perfect time to check out Hyde Project as they have their calendar full of local dates. Catch Hyde Project at Hurricane Brew Pub on Dec. 7, The Pub (on the ESho) on Dec. 8 and at The Garage on Dec. 9.

Folksy Grrrlz

The Indigo Girls have been a staple in folk music for over 20 years now. They eventually made their way into the Athens, Ga., alternative scene and began a stellar rise to popularity that continues. Recently, they turned heads via a collaboration with Pink (“Dear Mr. President”).

On Saturday, Jan. 26, they hope to turn more noggins in the Port City when The Indigo Girls bring acoustic bliss to Mobile. Tickets are on sale now through the Saenger Box Office and through Ticketmaster.

Grunge survivor

When Kurt Cobain took his own life, the public saw the end of Nirvana but from the ashes of the band that made “grunge” a household word, drummer Dave Grohl emerged from behind the drum-set and founded Foo Fighters.

Since its creation, this band has maintained their posterity and fan-appeal with a slough of releases and critical acclaim, and they’re coming to the Gulf Coast. Pensacola will be the scene for this show, and tickets are on sale for their Jan. 20 performance.
