Alabama Folk Pottery
Where: Mobile Museum of Art (4850 Museum Dr. in Langan Park)

It’s an ancient art form with a local history stretching from the eons before Europeans ever set foot upon Southern soil. Born in the clay belowand perfected in the fires of long forgotten civilizations, shaping pottery is a hallmark of every stage of man’s journey.
Organized in partnership with the Birmingham Museum of Art, this exhibition documents Alabama’ extensive pottery heritage. Pottery-making families are shown from the early days of the state, when their ceramic their work was a necessity of life, to contemporary times when aesthetics are the thrust of the artisans.
Museum hours are Mon. – Sat., 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sun., 1 – 5 p.m.
Entrance is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and military, $6 for students and group rates are available.

Works by Sara Jones
Where: Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, Gallery (1255 Dauphin St.)
When: Through Feb. 15
Sara Jones, an ASMS alum, earned a Master of Fine Arts and Museum Studies from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston and was a featured artist in the 2007 Simply the Best show at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. Her work has been highlighted in local periodicals on several occasions.
For now, Jones is teaching at the illustrious Pratt Institute in New York City and working at Cooper Union archives, also in NYC.
According to the artist’s statement, this show “explores the aesthetics of destruction and deterioration” in an attempt “to prove them worthy of a consideration deeper than lament.”

Gala Christmas Concert
Where: Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Claiborne and Dauphin Streets in downtown Mobile)
When: Friday, Dec. 21, 8:15 p.m.
Voices will be raised in a salute to the holidays that ties the religious and the artistic under the direction of Christopher Uhl. The program features Gustav Holst’s “Christmas Day,” a choral fantasy on old carols and other works of the season.
The slate of performers are the Musica Sacra Choir and Chamber Orchestra with soprano Melanie Zoghby Cummins, Mobile’s Singing Children (Director: Susan Hoitt) and McGill Chamber Choir (Director: Beth Haley).
