Well, guys. The Christmas party season has not been pretty. Why are there soooo many? I can’t take it and the misbehavior by folks (including yours truly) has been seriously crazy. Oh well, ‘tis the season, right? We’ll just go with that.
A mayoral Christmas party
Mayor Sam Jones threw quite the shindig at the Mobile Museum of Art Thursday, Dec. 14. The food was good. The bar was better and tons of local “celebs” were present, including FOX 10 anchor Bob Grip. Also in attendance, the lovely ladies of WKRG, Kimberly Curth, Tiffany Craig, Jene Young and Jessica Taloney. And Lagniappe’s Rob Holbert and Ashley Toland, as well as the Press-Register’s Dan Murtaugh and Jeff Amy also made the rounds.
There were also quite a few politicos and big wigs – newly elected county commissioner Merceria Ludgood, District Attorney John Tyson and his very cute wife, Chief of Police Phillip Garrett, Chief of Staff Al Stokes and State Senators Gary Tanner and Vivian Davis Figures.
Now let me just tell you, the senators decided to really cut a rug. They danced some sort of fancy dance (maybe the Charleston?) in front of the band. It was priceless. Aww shucks, I forgot to ask Vivian if Louis Gosset, Jr., is still chasing after her. If so, Sgt. Foley may come after Tanner. Watch out, Gar!
She can sing too!
And it seems dancing is not Sen. Figures only talent. No wonder Chappy loves her so (that was an obscure reference to Louis Gossett Jr.’s character in “Iron Eagle”). Another spy reported she recently broke into song at a Chamber of Commerce legislative update meeting. According to our spy she sang several verses of McFadden and Whitehead’s “Ain’t no Stopping Us Now,” and “it was very good,” the spy said.
When Christmas parties collide
The Press Club, AdFed and Public Relations Council Christmas parties were all held together at the Royal Scam Friday, Dec. 14. The food was fantastic. One party-goer admitted to having about four helpings of the shrimp and grits. They were fine.
Anyway, FOX 10’s Anissa Centers, who stopped by before anchoring her last evening newscast, made some tearful goodbyes to fellow media folks. The Boozester is going to miss Ms. Anissa terribly. She is heading up to Hotlanta with her husband, who is taking a job as a car dealership manager. Good Luck, Nissa!
The band, Glass Joe, in which our own Rob Holbert is a member, kept the crowd going. WKRG’s Alan Sealls sat in with them and played the congas, though some idiot kept screaming, “Mel Showers is playing the congas.”
People, puh-leeze. Mel goes out in disguise. And plays sax.
The Lagniappe crew embarrassed themselves by dancing and playing the tambourine and and egg shaker thingy – all in front of WKRG”s storm stud, John Nodar and his lovely wife, Janet.
People, let me just tell you, Alan “Shake it Baby” Sealls may have to give up his this whole little meterorlogy thing, as the man plays a mean drum.
“Biggest Loser” from Mobile?
An e-mail tipster sent in this little tidbit. We’re a little behind but I still thought it was interesting. Apparently, the guy who won the R&B category of WPMI’s Shooting Star singing competition, Bryan Andretti was on this season’s “Biggest Loser,” which is on NBC. I’m not exactly sure if this guy is from Mobile or just lived here for a while, but his myspace page is www.myspace.com/bryanthebiggestloser. It chronicles his battle with the bulge.
Miss Loretta or Miss Interesting
The Fruit Loop spies reported that the Swedish Reality show that was supposed to film local drag queen Miss Loretta at B-Bob’s was a no-show at the club Friday, Dec. 7. But Miss Loretta said they had just decided to film her in her hometown of Jackson, Ala., earlier in the day. The show, which features “America’s 100 Most Interesting People” showed Miss Loretta out of drag performing her day job as a used car salesman in Jackson. Then they showed her eating a burger at Billy’s Burger House, and my spy said he thinks she said she was in drag while eating the burger on a picnic table. Well, I certainly can’t wait to see this one.
Only in Mobile…
Word on the street is that city councilman Fred “Moonpie” Richardson got his sparkling moonpie at Felix’s the opther day. The city councilman who has been lobbying for a moonpie with fireworks shooting out of it to be dropped off the top of the RSA Tower was served a moonpie with sparklers sticking out of it at the request of some Chamber of Commerce jokesters.
I hear the whole restaurant started clapping.
Spirit of LaSalle
A couple of the Lagniappers had the opportunity to cruise on the luxury yacht, The Spirit of La Salle, last week and said it was really cool. It boards out of the Mobile Convention Cneter and cruises up and down the Mobile River, though they can go anywhere you want them to for private parties. But they also have dinner and scenic crusies Tuesday – Saturday. So check out their Web site, www.spiritoflasalle.com, for the schedule and rates.
Well kids, that’s all I got. I’ll have to say, I’m just about holiday partied out and Mardi Gras is just around the corner. It’s too much! Oh well, never fear, I’ll make it through and collect oh so much gossip just for you. Awwwww that rhymed. Well, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and I’ll catch you back up in the ‘08. But until then, remember whether rain or shine, dramatic or scandalous or just some plain ol’ Anissa Centers lovin’, I will be there. Ciao.
