No Regrets, New Works by Jim Hayward
and
Mardi Gras, Mobile by M.A. Battilana
Where: Skinny Gallery, Mobile Arts Council (318 Dauphin St.)
When: Through Friday, Feb. 1
After three decades in the graphic design business, Jim Hayward decided to follow his artistic dreams. This display of seven assemblages and nine paintings highlights his love of found object sculpture and abstracts.
Hayward describes his nine-month foray into this new realm as “incredible” and says his “energy level is off the charts.”
Also on display are a series of 24 photos from M.A. Battilana depicting an average day immersed in Mobile Mardi Gras. From the innocence of a child’s expectation to the reality of besotten revelry, Battilana attempts to capture the entire experience from a variety of perspectives. The photographer used a pair of cameras with “fast” lenses in order to effectively capture the richness of the backgrounds, ambient light and genuine spontaneity of the street scenes he felt impossible with flash.
The opening reception for both exhibits occurs during the Jan. 11 LoDa Art Walk from 6 – 9 p.m.
The Skinny Gallery is free and open to the public Mon – Fri, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

A Delicate Balance by Edward Albee
Where: Joe Jefferson Playhouse (11 S. Carlen St.)
When: Jan. 11 – 20
This dark comedy garnered the first of three Pulitzer Prizes for one of America’s greatest playwrights and orbits an older WASP couple who take in a series of boarders and visitors. Whether it’s the wife’s abrasive alcoholic sister or a pair of empty-nesters fleeing an inexplicable terror, the interlopers reveal a series of demons haunting the interior of all the characters.
The play is a refreshing psychological study for the Midtown theatre company and contains fully mature content that has led to numerous awards for actors since its premiere in 1966.
Running on consecutive weekends, the Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 p.m. while the Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m.
Entrance is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors/active military and $10 for students.
