*A Chorus Line

Where: Joe Jefferson Playhouse (11 S. Carlen St.)

When: April 4 – 6, April 10 – 13*

Auditions are innately harrowing and competition for a chance on a Broadway stage is the rawest of all. That process inspired a storyline that was once the longest running American musical and eventually won nine Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for drama.

“A Chorus Line” unveils 25 disparate dancers aiming for 8 spots in a production on The Great White Way. The process allows each character to reveal intimate details from their life, from the comic to the corrosive and what it shows is no less than the breadth of the human experience.

A crew of directors, some from as far as the West Coast handle this taxing production for JJP that has been in rehearsal for months. The content is first-rate but decidedly adult in nature. Overly delicate sensibilities please be prepared for frank discussion of sexuality and abuse.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday night shows are at 8 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and active military and $10 for students.

*5th Bi-Annual Art @ Peace Park

Where: Memorial Park (1850 Government – by the Cannon)

When: March 29, 2008, 9am-6pm*

Initially staged as a DIY grassroots effort in a neighborhood pocket park across from Murphy High School, this event has grown into a larger venue with higher visibility.

Art With Heart organizer Heather Petterson has aided in guiding the burgeoning event into the triangular park at the heart of the Loop area and promises it will be bigger than ever with 32 artists displaying work.

The most notable change is the addition of live bands. A selection of popular music-blues, rock, hip-hop-will hopefully draw more people to the event that looks to help Volunteers of America in their efforts to supply art programs to the disabled.

There is also the addition of a 25-cent admission fee.

Concessions will be available.
