MOJO Jazz Jambalaya honoring Billie Holiday
Where: Gulf City Lodge (601 State St.)
When: Monday, May 26, 6:30 p.m.
Though her range was limited, Billie Holiday’s phrasing, mastery of microtones, nuance and sense of time were superlative and the blues-influenced dynamic she brought to her work cast a gargantuan shadow across all vocalists who followed. All the tragedy and heartache of her hard-lived years poured forth in each note she voiced.
Arts Alive honcho David Calametti is organizing this salute to the chanteuse and local vocalist Sharon Moore has the daunting task of interpreting Lady Day’s work for the crowd. Moore will be accompanied by a piano trio.
Entrance is $10, $7 for MOJO members and the fee includes a jambalaya dinner.
A cash bar will be available.

Art sought for fundraising auction
Each year, 15 Place, the multi-service center for the homeless featured in the last issue of Lagniappe, riaises funds with auctions of work donated by local artists. the theme of the event is “Art Soup” and donations were initially limited to the “bowl” concept, then changed to include “various mediums, not just clay, donate a piece of work: their interpretation of a bowl.”
This year, another silent auction of around 40 additional works will be included.
The annual party features a wide selection of food for the attendees, including some gourmet items, and live entertainment.
Committee Chair Noretta Walls is already starting to assemble names for art donors and anyone interested in aiding this cause should contact her at nwalls@usouthal.edu
Kevin Lee is Lagniappe associate editor. Contact him at klee@lagniappemobile.com.
