New coffee shop owners Nathan Blaesing and Kira Zielinski have invested an enormous amount of energy and goodwill into this venture near the University of South Alabama that they hope to turn into an enclave of creative spirit.

Along the archetypal coffeehouse motif, Dr. Java will host monthly poetry readings on the last Sunday of each month that are open to all comers.

MOJO Jazz Jambalaya
honoring Henry Mancini
Where: Gulf City Lodge (601 State St.)
When: Jume 23, 6:30 p.m.
Though he isn’t quite in the pantheon with immortals like Miles Davis or John Coltrane, composer Henry Mancini did yeoman’s work by slipping jazz and its elements into the popular musical lexicon via decades of work on television and movie soundtracks. The slinky opening notes to the “The Pink Panther Theme” and the barreling chords of the theme from “Peter Gunn” alone have a notable spot in the American songbook.
MOJO will employ the services of drummer Jim Marshall who will lead a quartet through their paces covering Mancini’s compositions.
Entrance is $10, $7 for MOJO members and includes a jambalaya dinner. A cash bar is available.
For more info, call 459-2298 or e-mail mobilejazz@bellsouth.net.
