Embracing the Earth

Where: Skinny Gallery, Mobile Arts Council (318 Dauphin St.)

When: Through July 18

Dr. Eva Maria Dominquez Gomez is a visiting scholar from the University of Extemadura in Merida, Spain. Her terra-centric work is inspired by her kinship with the environment in around her home of Ceceras, Spain. The mixed media pieces on wood were well received in an earlier show at the University of South Alabama, and now she brings the same dynamism downtown for few short weeks.

The gallery is open Mon – Fri, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is free. For further info, call 251-432-9796 or go to www.mobilearts.org.

A Visionary Journey in Glass

& Southeastern Juried Exhibition 2008

Where: Mobile Museum of Art (4850 Museum Dr. in Langan Park)

When: Through September

A pair of shows promise to keep the midsummer patrons enthralled as a day in the cool confines of the galleries serves as a top-notch way to beat the heat.

One 35-year retrospective of artist Josh Simpson’s glasswork is a study of the creative process in growth. It covers his early forays in a self-taught medium to his later triumphs, and reflects his singular talent.

Simpson will give a lecture on his career prior to the exhibit’s reception.

The Southeastern Juried Exhibition covers all media in 12 states with a collection that always brings unheralded passions to bear.

The Simpson show runs July 4 – Sept. 21, while the other runs July 11 – Sept. 14.

The museum is open Mon – Sat, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sun, 1 – 5 p.m.

Entrance is $10 for adults, $9 for senior citizens and military and $6 for students, with group rates available.
