Black Flag was one of the many legendary bands that made punk rock an institution. Founding member Gregg Ginn dwelled amongst the sweat and fury of this band and acted as a founding member and primary songwriter. Ginn left the band and went on to start SST Records, which boasted such bands as the Minutemen, Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth.
Ginn’s latest project is Jambang. This four-member group is taking jam back to the underground sounds by employing traditional instruments alongside electronica devices. Jambang completes the experience with a cavalcade of psychedelic media.
Jambang will have stellar line-up to support their show. The Pine Hill Haints will give the Port City is regular dose of “Alabama Ghost Music.”
Nappie Award winner The Western Lands also plans on giving the audience an intense set of instrumental music. El Cantador will round out the night with their alternative sounds.

Theresa Andersson CD Release Party
Date: Sunday, Aug. 31, 7 p.m.
Venue: Callaghan’s Irish Social Club (916 Charleston St.) 433-9374
Tickets: $8 at the door
Theresa Andersson is back in the Oakleigh Garden District celebrating the release of her latest album “Hummingbird, Go!” on Basin Street Records, a follow-up to her 2006 self-titled release. The New Orleans-based musician has charmed local crowds with her beautiful voice and skill on the violin and various other musical instruments.
Producer Tobias Froberg (Peter, Bjorn and John) manned the helm for this release, and poet Jessica Faust lent her lyrical skills. Andersson took on a Do-It-Yourself role with this one recording the demos and finishing the album in her kitchen.
With “Hummingbird, Go!,” Andersson found the inspiration for each track organically while strolling by the Mississippi River or spending time in her garden. Catch Andersson while you can. After playing Callaghan’s, she will embark on a nationwide tour in September.
Funky queen in Biloxi
Chaka Khan
Date: Friday, Aug. 29, doors at 6:30 p.m.
Venue: Hard Rock Biloxi (777 Beach Blvd.) Biloxi, Ms., www.hardrockbiloxi.com

Chaka Khan has every right to hold the title of “Queen of Funk Soul.” Khan began her career at the tender age of 11 with a group in her hometown of Chicago called the “Crystalettes.” Back then, she was known as Yvette Marie Stevens, but after becoming active with the Black Panthers and their free breakfast program, she took the African name “Chaka.”
Khan found the funk and began performing with a band called Rufus. Many might recognize Rufus for their song “Tell Me Something Good.” Rufus evolved into a multi-platinum band before Khan left the band.
After her departure, Khan gained momentum as a solo-artist in the ‘70s and ‘80s with songs such as “I’m Every Woman” and the Prince cover “I Feel for You.” Along the way, she earned critical acclaim along with numerous awards including Grammys and a Lifetime Achievement award from BET.
Khan continues to record and perform, and she released her twelfth studio album “Funk This” in 2007. This one earned her two Grammys at the 2008 ceremony. In January of this year, Khan also had the chance to be under Broadway’s bright lights when she played the role of “Sofia” in the stage adaptation of “The Color Purple.”
