Studio art

classes

Where: Space 301

(301 Conti St.)

Space 301 has long been proclaimed as not just an exhibition space but also a spot for instruction. The renovation of their space has now made that possibility a reality.

Classes will meet once a week for six sessions, Oct. 13 – Nov. 22. One workshop is scheduled to meet for an all-day Saturday session Dec. 6.

Offered this term are courses in printmaking, figurative and hand-built ceramics, children’s and homeschooler art classes, bookbinding, oil and acrylic painting, quiltmaking, sculpture and bookarts. Most will meet in the new third floor classroom of the adjacent clerestory. A landscape class will meet on the rooftop terrace.

Instuctors scheduled are Laurel Aiken, Zach DePolo, Billie Goodloe, Nancy Goodman, April Hopkins, Fred Marchman, Wayne McNeil, Walter Simon, Peg Udall, and Devlin Wilson.

A skinny September

Work by Brian Young and photos from ‘Look Up Mobile!’

Where: Skinny Gallery, Mobile Arts Council (318 Dauphin St.)

When: through Oct. 3

While others are content with a slot here and there, Mobilian Brian Young gets a whole room to himself in the next exhibition at Skinny Gallery.

The photographs of Julia Bacy, Terry Hartley, Michael Mastro, Keith Necaise and Marty Sheffield were included as visual clues for a scavenger hunt. The winner of the hunt will be announced and all the photographs sold at an auction on Sept. 16.

An opening reception is planned for the LoDa Artwalk on Sept. 12.

The gallery is open Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

For further information, go to www.mobilearts.org or call 251-432-9796.

Celebrating lucky seven

MOJO Jam VII

Where: Gulf City Lodge (601 State St.)

When: Sept. 22, 6:30 p.m.

Since the wildly calamitous coverageof Tropical Storm Fay put the kibosh on last month’s MOJO soon-to-be rescheduled salute to John Coltrane, the jazz group is on to its next order of business which basically entails an anniversary celebration.

MOJO Jam VII will feature the talents of local trumpeter Jermaine English Quintet who wowed crowds earlier this year in the MOJO nod to Miles Davis. The birthday party marks the Sept. 10, 2001 inception of the jazz society.

Entrance for the event is $10, $7 for members.

A jam session is included and participating musicians enter for free.

MOJO members are encouraged to bring a food dish to share.

For further info, call 251-459-2298 or e-mail mobilejazz@bellsouth.net.
