Irreverent classic on campus
Tartuffe
Where: Laidlaw Performing Arts Center, University of South Alabama
When: Nov. 13 – 22
Arguably Moliere’s most famous comedy, this play revolves the hypocritical title character who manipulates a wealthy man’s religious fervor in order to steal his riches.
First performed in 1664 at Versailles, the resulting outcry from the devoted religious zealots in the court of King Louis XIV resulted in the play’s censorship. The Archbishop of Paris threatened excommunication not only for those who produced it, but even those who dared watch or read it.
Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. for night shows and 2 p.m. for the matinee on Nov. 15.
