Is that a threat?

Dear Mrs. Boozie Beer Nues:

You don’t have to publish this letter – my name is Billy Dickerson, A.K.A. Billy Jack, retired ABC Board District 9 MOB/AL.

You create friction by showing us (readers) Kid Rock’s middle finger. I don’t take anything personal, but I think you need some professional help for putting that photo in there.

You, and other reporters have criticized ABC board agents for quite a while. Ever hear that “You are what you read?” I believe also, “You are what you write.” My own observation about your people in Mobile drinking establishments is simple. All of those you describe have one or two problems. Alcohol is one, the other is drugs, or both.

If you run anything on or by me you will find out real fast, that I’m not a Drugstore Cowboy. I never married, and I’m not gay. A lot of people that have an asshole mentality think single people are gay. NOT SO. Those kind of people can stew in their own juice.

P.S. If you have a superiority complex, it’s best you drop it.

Regards,

Billy Dickerson

Why so down?

Mr. Holbert:

First, let me congratulate you on the great publication. I read the Lagniappe on a regular basis and consider it essential to the concept of “Keeping Mobile Funky.” I was however, dismayed with the views you and Ms. Toland shared with us regarding the “New Plan for Old Mobile.”

Why the negativity? While the cost of the plan was great, the benefits far outweigh the cost. (Please also note that the Downtown Mobile Alliance raised approximately 25% of the funding through private sources, with the city being out of pocket for the remaining $300,000). Any progressive city must have a plan. As our city grows, and we attempt to entice outside investment and developers, we must exhibit that we are worthy and possess vision.

A few quick points:

1) If you really think that containers will fall on your head while

cruising the river, then you should get out of the office and onto the

river every once in a while. I happen to enjoy watching our economy

moving. We should worry when the containers stop moving.

2) As to your complaint regarding the geographical scope of the plan,

just read the self explanatory title. We all benefit from a healthy

city center.

3) While I agree that some of the goals are ambitious, let’s not

forget the greatest accomplishment of the plan: it spurred a

tremendous amount of interest in the future of our city. If just

briefly, it sparked an active discussion amongst us about where we can

be if we consolidate our efforts and put our minds to it.

In stark contrast, I would like to applaud Mr. Gleszer on a great column. He eloquently penned a reminder of how fortunate we are to live where we do. I needed his optimistic viewpoint to help me recover from the negativity I just finished reading in your and Ms.Toland’s columns…

Jubilee brings in catch

To the editor:

I found your article (Jubilee) in the Nov.5-18 issue interesting and I share your thought as well. The irony of the story, I had just finished up with a police report and dropped into the Coffee Loft. While I was waiting I read your article, for we live two blocks from the Fairhope Hardware store.

We had two of those Fairhope Hardware rockers on our front porch, and our neighbors liked them so well that they recently purchased two as well. They all were all stolen the night of the 11th!

It’s not losing the rockers that bothered me as much, as it was an indication of things changing in this beautiful community on Mobile Bay. Where you didn’t think twice about leaving articles outside, what time of the day or night you wanted to take a walk, and people looked you in the eye and bidded you well when you passed on the street

But I ‘m not going to allow this one incident to take away the charm that I feel for Fairhope, it’s still paradise to me. I just saw the humor that I was reading your article just minutes after the police had left my house.

Letter to Editor:

Your “Jubilee” columnist is correct that ESho folks have it made compared to big city dwellers(like many of us once were); but let’s not forget we have to fight to keep it that way! Seattle, Atlanta, Birmingham, etc. were once better places too, but unbridled “market” forces changed them for the worse over time.

The same forces are at work here too, as younger generations(and others) sell the family farms/businesses to the highest bidder- opening the door to corporate takeover(and making their ancestors roll in their graves).

Ironically, it seems the relative “newcomers” who have seen the consequences of poor planning elsewhere are fighting hardest to preserve our quality of life: many oldtimers are just looking to cash in(so it seems).

Sincerely

James Watkins
