Hello my pretties. I was beginning to wonder if you guys were ever going to misbehave again, as there was definitely a gossip drought along with our recent lack of precipitation. But thankfully with the sprinkles and flooded Midtown streets, also came some scattered showers of juicy tidbits, involving local celeb gambling, politico porn and a couple of visits from the stork.

So grab your umbrellas and get ready for a deluge of delectable delights.

You gotta know when to hold ‘em…

St. Mary’s Casino Night fundraiser was the place to be May 6…if you wanted to meet people running for public office. The annual shindig featured a “Roaring ‘20s” theme, complete with mobsters and flappers. Two burly dudes were even pressed into flapper getups at some point in the evening, which was entertaining in a very hairy way.

In good Catholic fashion, there was plenty of seafood and barbecue, cold adult beverages and gambling, sort of. No money changed hands, but guests could play a little blackjack or craps and rub shoulders with “celebrity” dealers. Our celebrity threshold must be a bit low, as most of the celebrity dealers were folks running for public office, sprinkled with a few news people.

Among those dealing were sheriff candidates Sam Cochran, Kyle Callaghan, circuit court candidate Robert Smith – who is missing a hell of an opportunity to claim he has the “Cure” for crime – and some other assorted politicos. WPMI anchor and Lagniappe columnist Scott Walker was slinging cards, as was Press-Register entertainment guru Lawrence Specker and WPMI sports anchor Pat Greenwood. Our own Rob Holbert was also reported to be a particularly rough blackjack dealer (I told you the celebrity threshold was low), cleaning out his entire table in short order.

City councilfolk Gina Gregory and William Carroll were also among the attendees. All in all, it was a nice way to raise money for the school, despite what Devereaux Bemis might think.

Goodbye Jeri Bear

Those who frequent Robbins Chevron at the corner of Ann and Government Streets may have noticed the absence of longtime store clerk Jeri Bear – and yes, that was her real name. It seems that after 14 years, the perpetually cheerful Jeri has decided to get out of the gas station biz and headed off to live in Louisiana.

I’m sure she’s happy, but something just seems wrong about not having Jeri Bear there to sell me a six pack or a pint of ice cream.

A little dirty viewing

We’ve heard from numerous sources close to the feds that a certain politico who has been in hot water recently has quite an affinity for dirty, nudie pics. Apparently when his home was raided, officials found some pretty freaky porn. Maybe he’ll have the opportunity to recreate some of it with his cellmate in the pokey.

A day without sushi? Noooo!

Down here in Mobile, we didn’t feel the effects of the recent nationwide boycott of businesses by Mexican immigrants as much as they did in bigger cities.

Well, that is unless you were craving Liquid’s delicious sushi last week. The doors to the sushi lounge were unexpectedly locked on Sunday, April 30 and Monday, May 1. It seems Liquid’s three Hispanic sushi rollers (yes, Hispanic sushi cooks) decided to cease operations in order to head to Atlanta and march in support of illegal Mexican immigrants.

They did so not only with the blessing of Liquid’s proprietors, but also joined by owner Jim Walker, who I believe is 100 percent Arkansasian. Wait, that makes it look like he’s half Asian, half Arkansasan…Arkansasanite? Whatever. He’s a good ol’ southern boy from Arkansas, who believes in the cause.

The note attached to the door read, “A Day without Immigrants” Monday, May 1, millions are expected to boycott work and businesses in demand of immigration reform. Organizers urged people to stay home and avoid spending money to demonstrate the enormous impact immigrants have on the US economy. Liquid Sushi bar will be closed today to give our dedicated employees the opportunity to participate in the demonstration, (and to give them a much needed day off!) We will reopen Tuesday, May 2 for normal business hours.”

Ok, OK. I’ll write a letter to Congress or something. Just don’t close my fave sushi joint again!

Poll dancing at Loretta’s

We’re not sure what they’re serving their own servers over at Loretta’s downtown on Conception Street, but apparently one waiter extraordinaire decided to give his customers a little more than the wine list. Last Saturday night, with a few tables in the hip eatery, the server decided to do a little poll dance, using one of the beams.

We hear it was quite the little spectacle.

That’s Hot-son

I’ve been hearing some of the male reporters in town have taken to calling Mobile City Councilwoman Connie Hudson, Connie Hot-son. That’s all. I just thought I’d share.

Stork Report

We’re pleased to announce two of Mobile’s coolest couples have reproduced.

Lagniappe’s own fabulous film critic, Asia Frey and her husband, artist/Water Table proprietor, Nick, welcomed their first child, a daughter, Evelyn “Evie” Marie a couple of weeks ago.

Miss Evie was followed by Kellen McDermott Thompson, son of Callaghan’s owner J.T. and his lovely wife Denise.

All went well, and everyone is home and, of course, sleepless.

Well, that’s it fro this issue, kids. Just remember whether rain or shine, scandalous or dramatic, or just some plain ol’ freaky porn lovin’, I’ll be there Ciao.
