Mobile Magnified

I was just cruising my favorite celebrity gossip Web site (www.perezhilton.com) and got to see a picture of Lindsay Lohan’s “downtown business.” It made me giggle to think of what would happen if we started printing that kind of quality stuff of our own local celebrities here in Boozie; Miss Nues, if you’re nasty, and I know you are or you wouldn’t be reading this. Hee hee hee hee. Oh the lawsuits! It’s probably for the best anyway, as I can’t imagine any of our Mobil-ebrities are sportin’ Brazilians.

Anyway, it’s been a busy couple of weeks for me, kids. With all the rock-n-roll shows and the groupie behavior that comes along with those, as well as Labor Day and the ultra swank CW launch party, I’m exhausted, but I have just enough energy left to spill my gossip-saturated guts, so grab a biscuit and sop ‘em up. (Yuck! Gut biscuits sound gross.)

Lyle Lovett’s Mobile

The night of Aug. 29 was a great night for music in Mobile. Folks were madly dashing from the fantastic Lyle Lovett show at the beautiful Saenger over to catch the funky G Love and Special Sauce at Soul Kitchen.

Lyle was so impressed with Mobile last time he was here in November on the Songwriters’ Tour with John Hiatt, he decided to come back with his big band and even came a day or so early so he could check things out. He was very complimentary of the city and said he was pleased to see all the preservation and development of the downtown area.

We heard he also had a big meal at Dauphin Street’s Little Kitchen. Hope he tried their sublime fried chicken.

G Love’s trail of sauce

There was a lot of heat in the ‘Kitchen, but people gladly took it to see Philly hip hop rocker G Love and his Special Sauce, who achieved fame in the late ‘90s with their songs “Baby’s Got Sauce” and “Cold Beverages.”

One of my favorite gossip correspondents, Groupie Spy, reported that during the last couple of songs Mr. Love’s road manager or somebody like that went around the crowd handing out passes to “hang out” with G after the show and she happened to be one of them.

Groupie Spy, who claims she only participated in this in order to get intel for her beloved Boozie (I’m sure), said the group was comprised of mostly girls, and a few guys who were clearly only there because the girls who had been asked back brought them along, probably begrudgingly. She said they were all taken to a room in the back of Soul Kitchen, where there were big coolers of bottled water, Guinness and Heineken. She also reported the girls were mostly brunettes, though she could not confirm if this was Mr. Love’s preference or just coincidence.

“It was like a bad reality TV show, like ‘Flavor of Love’ or something,” Groupie Spy said. “All the girls were looking around at each other, checking out the competition, gauging how drunk the others were to see if they could outlast one another.”

Sounds very dramatic. Perhaps VH-1 could start “Flavor of G-Love” or “Who wants some Special Sauce?”

Then Groupie Spy said a guy eventually came back and said G Love had decided to just stay out at the bar and everyone could join him there. At this point, Groupie Spy left. Bad gossip correspondent!

But thankfully, Downtown Spy tells me a lovely LoDa server ended up on the Love bus. No word on if any sauce was sampled, but we did hear the lovely has been receiving phone calls and text messages from him, asking her to come see him in Philadelphia.

Seen on the Scene

Robert Cray was spotted lunching at Café 615 the day of his show at the Saenger Thursday, Aug. 31. Cray was in town headlining 92 ZEW and Soundstage Live’s Blues Fest II, along with Eric Johnson and Wes Jeans.

Also spotted at the Double Olive last Wednesday night, Sept. 6 was Matt from 3 Doors Down, who was there enjoying the sounds of Phar Fletcher.

The Rue Returns

My Beach Spy, who frequents the Flora-Bama, was there Labor Day weekend and said it was crowded, but not as busy as you would have expected. He overheard one bartender complaining they only rang $8,000 at the upstairs bar Sunday night. That doesn’t seem too shabby to me, but maybe they are used to more.

Beach Spy also reported that former Red’s (I’m talking old school Red’s – circa early ‘90s) doorman Johnny Rue famous for his long beard and hat would be returning to the streets of LoDa. The Rue “transferred” to the beach to take a job at the Flora-Bama. We heard he was interviewed on CNN after Ivan because he rode out the storm across the street from the legendary stateline bar. The Rue said he wasn’t sure what he was going to be doing yet, but he looked forward to returning to the Port City, and he said he had “some stories to tell.”

CW launches in style

The WB and UPN recently joined forces to create a new network, called the CW. Our local FOX affiliate is the proud sister of this offspring, and they threw a swank party at The Saenger Theater Wednesday, Sept. 6. A lot of the movers and shakers were there, including MDI Media Group’s Don Davis, County Commissioner Steve Nodine, Press-Register media reporter Mike Brantley and of course FOX 10 celebs Anissa Centers, John Edd Thompson, Bob Grip, Jason Smith, among others.

Bob and Anissa emceed the event, which included a video previewing the new shows on the CW, which will officially launch Sept. 18.

Well kids, that’s all I got this time, but I feel like the fall gossip train has left the station and will not be making any stops. Don’t worry, I bought a first class ticket and will keep bringing you all the scoop which is only fit to print here. Just remember, whether rain or shine, dramatic or scandalous, or just some plain ol’ Sauce lovin’, I will be there. Ciao.
