Inexpectation: Paintings of Mark Davis
Where: Mobile Museum of Art (4859 Museum Dr., Langan Park)
When: March 30 – June 10
Hours: Mon – Sat, 10 a.m. -5 p.m.; Sun, 1 – 5 p.m.
Fans of Minimalism will get a treat with the Museum’s latest exhibit featuring six years’ worth of work from Mobile native Mark Davis. The deceptively simple Modernist paintings features textures and subtle variation of limited color that say as much by what they don’t do as by what they do.
The Modernist philosophy of color as interpreter of emotion fits with Davis’ utilization of hue to evoke a sense of the Gulf Coast. As a museum statement phrased it, “The sense of great, flat expanses enveloped in a thick wavering atmosphere is a familiar sensation in southern Alabama.”

Southern Market’s First Saturdays Art Market
Where: Southwest corner of Govt. & Royal Streets (Old Courthouse site)
When: Sat., April 7, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The new downtown greenspace across from the Museum of Mobile gets more usage when the museum and local artisans stage an outdoor market on the first Saturday of each month from March through June.
Invited artists will present an eclectic mix of quality original artwork in a variety of mediums, including painting, folk art, pottery, jewelry, fiber and sculpture.
Entrance to the event is free and makes a great complement to the farmers’ markets that have met with success since its implementation a few short years ago. Many locals hope the continued implementation of the greenspace convinces governmental leaders to keep the field accessible for the people and refrain from turning the spot into condos or yet another in an endless number of homages to Mardi Gras.

The exhibition “Love, Loss and Longing: The Impact of U.S. Travel Policy on Cuban-American Families” is touring nationally and Off.Dauph gallery has landed the show for June of this year.
But it doesn’t come cheap. The gallery is seeking sponsorships in the amount of $25 to make the exhibition a success. Sponsorship will assist in the shipping and handling fees, plus other costs in the traveling exhibit.
The exhibit features photographs of Cuban Americans who have been adversely affected by strained relations between the U.S. and Cuba. Each photograph in the exhibit is accompanied by a 250-word narrative in English and Spanish that describes the impact of restrictions on individuals and families.
Photos are by Cuban-American photographers/artists Nestor Hernández, Jr. and Juan-Sí González with text by Drs. Jeanne Lemkau and David Strug. The tour is organized by the Latin America Working Group Education Fund (LAWGEF) and the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA).
For further info and to make a sponsorship, please contact Tim Ellzey at 709-5003 or offdauphart@aol.com. Checks may be written to Off.Dauph ArtSpace, Inc., and may be sent to P. O. Box 1223, Mobile, Alabama, 36633.
