Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play became a film that cemented Marlon Brando’s stature in the American pantheon of cultural icons.
A Streetcar Named Desire tells the story of Blanche Dubois, a pretentious, fading relic of the Old South who comes to New Orleans to stay with her sister Stella and Stella’s husband Stanley Kowalski. Blanche is desperate for respite but instead meets her nemesis in Stanley who, descended from recent Polish immigrants, is a primal man with no understanding or interest in fantasy or the snobbery of the Southern class system.
