Just three days after being indicted on 57 felony charges, former Mobile County Circuit Court Judge Herman Thomas had his law license suspended by the state bar.

Tony McClain, general counsel for the Alabama Bar, confirmed that an order came down Monday suspending Thomas’ law license.

“We got an order this afternoon from the disciplinary commission suspending Thomas’ law license,” McClain said.

He added that if Thomas chooses to appeal the suspension, a hearing must be set within seven days. McClain also said the bar has two options at this point concerning Thomas; it can either move forward with disbarment proceedings, or it can wait to see if he is convicted on one of the 57 charges levied against him. If he is convicted of a felony, he will essentially automatically lose his license.

McClain said the latter of those two is the more likely course of action, as law enforcement agencies generally have more resources such proceeding than does the bar.

Contacted late Monday afternoon, Thomas’ attorney Robert “Cowboy Bob” Clark said he had not yet been given official notification of his client’s suspension, adding that he’d only heard about it.

“They know I represent Herman. I can’t understand why I wasn’t given a copy,” Clark said. “They’re just piling on now.”

McClain said a copy of the suspension would be provided to Clark immediately.
