If Creola Ruffin has her way, downtown Mobile will get more colorful before long. The local attorney who founded the Gulf Coast Ethnic and Heritage Jazz Festival more than 25 years ago is trying to marshal forces and call attention to homegrown talent.

“It started when Fred Wesley told me he had played all over the world, but he had never played in Mobile with his own band,” Ruffin said.
