JosĆ© Elizondoā€™s rags-to-riches story didnā€™t come with vast wealth, but it certainly hit the heights of fulfillment. One of his earliest compositions was a commissioned piece written for classical musical giant Carlos Prieto, who premiered it alongside Yo-Yo Ma.

ā€œ[Prieto] told me I had to write him a two-cello piece for a concert he was planning, and I was blown away,ā€ Elizondo said in a phone call. ā€œI told him I had never written for two cellos, and he was like, ā€˜Youā€™ll learn. Take your time.ā€™ā€
