The Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel & Spa in Mobile was named the most famous hotel in Alabama by "Business Insider" magazine. Originally opened in 1852 by James Battle and his family, the hotel became a gathering place for politicians, business leaders and high society figures across the South. The original structure was destroyed in a 1905 fire before being rebuilt and reopened in 1908. The landmark closed in 1974, then underwent a major restoration funded by Retirement Systems of Alabama and reopened in 2007.
