Austal

Austal USA in Mobile.

More than $20 million in tax abatements were quietly added to Austal USA’s state incentive package in recent weeks — a revision that has come to light as the company has disclosed a $17 million accounting gaffe and a subsequent announcement its president will retire.

Austal’s tax incentive records reported by the Alabama Department of Commerce currently show that the Australian-owned shipbuilder’s incentives are attributed to $741.3 million in projects, more than doubling its previously reported capital investments in the state and adding more than 1,000 jobs.
