Ivey Shark

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey threw her full support behind a Jefferson County lawmaker’s bill to alert Baldwin and Mobile county beachgoers of statistically rare shark attacks Tuesday, calling on lawmakers to quickly pass the legislation into law.

Formally named for Lulu Gribbin, a Mountain Brook teenager who lost her left hand and right leg in a shark attack off Florida’s Rosemary Beach in June 2024, House Bill 437 calls for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) to work with the Baldwin and Mobile County emergency management agencies and create a program to notify everyone on Alabama’s beaches of a recent shark attack or “unusual shark activity” in their specific area by sending a text message to their cell phones.
