Close to 37,000 Alabama students submitted applications to receive funding from the state’s new school choice program, according to Gov. Kay Ivey’s office. More than 40 percent of applications came from students already enrolled in private schools.

In 2023, the Alabama Legislature passed into law the Creating Hope and Opportunity for Our Students’ Education (CHOOSE) Act, which sets aside up to $7,000 in refundable income tax credits that families can use to cover the costs of their children’s education in private or home schools. The legislature projected the program would cost at least $100 million every year starting in 2025, and the Alabama Department of Revenue opened applications to the program in January.
