Horticulture and gardening have always been a part of Mobile’s life. The French who came to establish the city had instructions from King Louis XIV to collect and send back botanical specimens.

Describing the area’s climate as Mediterranean isn’t accurate. A Mediterranean climate, by definition, is where there are moist winters and dry summers and where rainfall ranges from 15 to 35 inches. Humidity is characteristically low in Mediterranean climates. None of the above fits Mobile’s climate, which would be more accurately described as humid subtropical. Mobile is wet pretty much year-round and experiences high humidity year-round. Mobile receives far more rainfall than any area with a Mediterranean climate. Mobile’s summers are characteristically humid and hot, uncomfortable to oppressive for most people. It’s dangerous to incorrectly assert a specific climate for an area when the climate is in fact something different, misleading the area’s gardeners into making horticultural decisions unsuitable for the real climate.
